CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
The popular notion that no Mafia wise guy would be stupid enough to set up shop in Washington, DC, ground zero for the FBI, wasnât lost on Nick Pipitone.
He didnât consider himself stupid, though. Quite the opposite. He saw DC as a wide-open playing field, virtually no competition.
Plus, he had an ace up his sleeve.
Now, Pip, as he was known to just about everyone, sat in the back office of his Italian Deli and Café. The smell of fresh bread was everywhere, along with rich tomato sauce, garlic and cheeses.
Business was good, supplemented with income produced by everything from heroin and prescription drugs to prostitution and loan sharking. The deli and café were real businesses; people came in and bought food, had coffee, all on the up and up. The only difference was, occasionally a customer would head to the back of the establishment to a steel door. They had to knock, and a camera let the people inside see who was at the door.
Right now, though, Pip wasnât counting his money. He was thinking about how to best protect it.
One of his associates, related to his ace-in-the-hole, had created a problem for him.
Pip was determined to nip it in the bud.
There was a knock on the door and Pip glanced at the video screen and nodded to one of his men. They opened the door.
A young woman walked in. She had on black yoga shorts, hi-topped black Chuck Taylors and a Rolling Stones t-shirt. She had a pale face, black hair slicked back, and thin lips devoid of any lipstick.
She moved with a liquid grace and Pip once again marveled at the notion that the East Coast organized crime familyâs most trusted assassin was this 95-pound twenty-something young woman.
âRamona,â Pip said.
She slid into the seat across from his desk.
âIs that prosciutto bread fresh? Made today?â she asked.
âOf course,â Pip said, acting insulted.
She nodded.
âWeâve got a problem.â
âThatâs what I figured. I wouldnât be here if we didnât.â
Pip laid out the sequence of events and where Ramona needed to concentrate her efforts. Namely, the private investigator in DC whoâd been contacted about their mutual attorney friend.
âProbably best if the body is never found,â he added.
She smiled and stood to go. âOf course,â she said.
âDonât eat too much of that bread, itâs fattening,â he said.
âScrew you, Pip,â she shot back.
He laughed.
Even he had to admit, it was a nervous laugh.
